Shepherd’s Hut – perfect for a romantic break
The Shepherd’s hut was built to our specification. We wanted to ensure that it could accommodate a full-length bed for maximum comfort (who wants to sleep crunched up unless you’re a dormouse?) as well as a wet room equipped with a shower, basin and an upmarket self-composting loo.
A drop-leaf oak table was fitted under the triple windows to maximize working space (although it is difficult to remain focused on tasks when the view is of the beckoning Brecon Beacons, but it’s great for somewhere to spread out the weekend papers). The attention to detail is wonderful with oak floorboards, underfloor central heating (even in the wet room), sheep’s wool insulation in the walls and a wood burning stove for good measure.
Even the ironmongery was sourced and made locally. Once built, the hut was finally winched into place (quite a feat of engineering in itself) so that the largest window looks out towards the aforementioned Brecon Beacons, the window over the bed looks up across the field towards a majestic oak whilst the view from the stable door is of Hay Bluff and the Black Mountains. Amanda set to with her sewing machine to make the soft furnishings as well as upholstering the chairs. She then rummaged around in the barn and in local shops to find the remaining pieces to give the hut its finishing touches.
Outside there is your own private hot tub to soak away the aches and pains of the day. You can relax on the swing seat on the decking and enjoy the panoramic views whilst supper cooks in the pizza oven or BBQ. As dusk melts into night you can marvel at the stars in the Dark Sky Reserve whilst toasting marshmallows over the open fire.
Each morning Amanda will bring a continental breakfast hamper to your door.
Outside you will find your own decking area with a swing seat to relax and soak up the far ranging views. You might decide to cook a pizza in the pizza oven or enjoy a barbecue, whilst a fire bowl enables you to stay up late into the night counting stars and spotting constellations whilst toasting marshmallows – this is what romantic weekend breaks are all about.
Everything has been thought of; from wine glasses to corkscrews, hairdryers to bathrobes, toiletries to tea-making facilities, books and maps to picnic rugs and firebowl… The only item we ask you to bring is a torch or two. The Brecon Beacons is only the fifth destination in the world to be granted International Dark Sky Reserve status. Although magical and romantic to have solely moonlight and starlight to guide you, it can make it tricky to see where you are going.
A continental breakfast hamper is delivered to your door each morning so you can have a lazy start to the day.

What Our Clients Say
We had a wonderful 4 night stay – walking to the Four Waterfalls, 12 miles around Llangors Lake and a delicious meal at the Griffin. We also had a great trip to Hay and Llanthony Priory. The Shepherd’s Hut was lovely and cosy and the breakfasts were delicious. We enjoyed having pizza in the outdoors oven with a gorgeous view. Thank you.
I’d rate Argoed Barns as one of my very best holiday finds: outstanding accommodation with a wealth of personal touches and bags of style, not to mention the most spectacular view one could wish for. What a fabulous escape from the horrors of coronavirus.
We have been absolutely blown away by Argoed Barns and the Shepherd’s Hut. From the moment we arrived we felt welcome and relaxed; thank you for all the little touches that made it feel so homely, yet luxurious! The view is breathtaking! Thank you for the delicious breakfast, we were very well looked after and beautifully presented too. The homemade preserves were a lovely touch, as was the welsh yoghurt. Overall, we had a truly memorable stay; one we will talk about for years to come. Thank you for letting us into your little piece of paradise here in Wales.
